2. About document codes / ISBNs / ISSNs
The coding of documents and
UNESCO policy directives regarding publications are
defined in the UNESCO Manual.

a public nature
- Enter the ISSN (International
Standard Serial Number) if you send a periodical;
- Enter the ISBN (International
Standard Book Number) if you send a book;
a. Document codes
Each document must have a code
Although HERMES generates document codes automatically, we recommend
that each Field Office /Institute/Centre manages its own list of document
codes.
Document codes must appear on the PDF; depending on the layout, it
should be in the 6 first or 6 last pages of the document.
Each code should consit of the following elements:
- 2-letter
ISO country code
- year of publication
- the abbreviation of your domain of activity;
- the abbreviation of the document type*
- a sequential number

- BR/
- BR/2004/
- BR/2004/SS/
- BR/2004/SS/PI
- BR/2004/SS/PI/32
|
- Institutes and Centres: Institutes and
Centres: please use the first 3 letters of your institutional
acronym.
e.g.: IES/2004/ED/ME/12
N.B. If you send Poster or PowerPoint files,
please insert a title page : download the model, fill
in the fields and follow the procedures indicated in FAQs How
to create one PDF from electronic documents with different formats?
- The code must be the same for ALL language versions and
must contain the publication year of the original language (e.g. BPI/ENM/2004/PI/2 for
an English document published in 2004 and BPI/ENM/2004/PI/2 for
its French version published in 2005).

- To replace a document in UNESDOC, add REV.,
REV.2 etc. at the end of the code (the new code has to be put
on the PDF document; see FAQs How
to add a code, ISBN or ISSN to a PDF document?)
e.g. : BR/2003/CL/RP/2/REV.
BR/2003/CL/RP/2/REV.2

You have to request an ISBN for each language version of
book titles published. ISBNs are assigned by UNESCO Publishing: email.
