How to select texts in PDF files

I. Using Acrobat Reader (free-of-charge)

A - Copy page-by-page

  • Open a document from UNESDOC and display the page you are looking for.
  • Click on the  tool 'T' so that three icons appear:
    1. Selection of text(²)
    2. Selection of text in columns(²)
    3. Selection of graphics
  • Choose option 1 or 2, select your text," copy " it using the right-hand button of the mouse, then open a word-processing application and "paste" it.

(1) In English, French, Spanish and recents Russian documents
(2) If the selection "text" does not work, it means that the page displayed is an "image"

B - Copy the whole document

  • Open a document from UNESDOC
  • Click on the "hand" tool
  • In your opened document, click on the right-hand button of the mouse and select "Continuous"
  • Click on the  tool 'T'
  • In your opened document, click on the right-hand button of the mouse and "Select all"
  • "Copy" the selected text
  • Open a word-processing application and "paste" it.

II - Using Acrobat : copy formatted text (page-by-page with the initial layout)

    1. First of all open Acrobat outside your browser and inside "File", "Preference", "General",  unclick4 "Web browser integration"
    2. Then start up your browser and open a PDF document from UNESDOC : the document is opened in Acrobat window; this allows you to open several files at the same time.
    3. Click on the tool 'T' so that four icons appear:

      Choose selection of text "formatted" (page-by-page with the initial layout) and proceed, as above, to paste the selected text in your Word processor.

(4) Working with Netscape may cause problems


How to create shortcuts

It is now possible to have direct access to a Resolution, a Decision or a paragraph of the 30 C/5 Approved by using the mode "named destination" of the PDF files*

Example:
From your WEB pages, you would like to consult Resolution 30 C/29, the English version:

Proceed in the same way for the 30 C/5 approved

Example:
To access paragraph 12101 of the French version

 *These methods are operational on:

  • 30 C/5 Approved, 31 C/5 Approved (English, French)
  • 18 to 31 C/Resolutions (English, French)
  • 109 to 163 EX/Decisions (English, French)
